- E2E-BPF microscope: extended depth-of-field microscopy using learning-based implementation of binary phase filter and image deconvolution The research team, led by Professor Chulmin Joo from the Department of Mechanical Engineering has developed a depth-of-field (DoF) extension computational imaging platform, the E2E-BPF microscope. Conventional microscopes face challenges in acquiring high-resolution, large DoF images due to the intrinsic trade-off between DoF and resolution. The research team resolved this intrinsic problem by designing a binary phase filter (BPF) using deep learning and jointly optimizing the image reconstruction network. This novel computational imaging platform allows for approximately 16-fold enhancement in DoF, when compared to conventional microscope with the same numerical aperture. The research outcome was published on November 13, 2023, in the journal 'Light: Science & Applications' (IF : 19.4). Recognizing the significance of the research findings, it has been extensively covered and highlighted by various domestic and international media, including the 'National Research Foundation of Korea', 'Electronic Newspaper', 'Wiley Analytical Science' and 'EurekAlert'. - Shape Memory Composite Stent Analysis through Finite Element (2023.11.10)
- Shape Memory Composite Stent Analysis through Finite Element Mr. Kim Youngbin, a doctoral candidate in the research team led by Professor Jeon Heungjae in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, simulated the behavior of shape memory composite stents using finite element analysis. The research team investigated the behavior of a composite material incorporating polycaprolactone, a material with shape memory properties, and iron(III) oxide (Fe3O4) added to enhance magnetic responsiveness and stiffness. By applying environmental conditions such as heat, light, and magnetic fields, they studied the material's ability to retain its initial shape. The research findings were presented at the 2023 Fall Conference of the Korean Society for Composite Materials (November 18-20, 2023), and Mr. Kim Youngbin received the 'Best Paper Presentation Award' for this work.

- Improvement of performance and durability of direct methane protonic ceramic fuel cell through self-assembled Ni-Rh bimetallic catalyst Professor Jongsup Hong's research team (Dr. Hong) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering developed a self-assembled Ni-Rh bimetallic catalyst for the anode of hydrogen fuel cells to promote the transition to an eco-friendly hydrogen economy. Through this research, performance and durability of the fuel cell were improved by approximately 2 and 20 times, respectively, compared to current fuel cells, and it was verified that power can be generated by directly injecting natural gas without a hydrogen generating device. This research has been published in the renowned international academic journal "Nature Communications (IF: 17.694)" on November 18, 2023, and was announced in the National Research Foundation of Korea and several online articles. - Improving electrochemical performance of practical high-temperature solid oxide cells with atomically dispersed platinum
- Improving electrochemical performance of practical high-temperature solid oxide cells with atomically dispersed platinum electrocatalysts supported on gadolinia doped ceria Professor Jongsup Hong's research team (Jihong Min) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and a research team at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology has unveiled the capability of atomically dispersed catalysts to function reliably in high-temperature electrochemical devices, avoiding thermal degradation. The strong interactions between the atomic metal catalyst and the ceramic support prevent aggregation and enhance electrochemical performance when integrated into the porous electrode using an in-situ synthetic technique. Moreover, the thermal stabilization significantly expands the range of potential applications for atomically dispersed catalysts, enabling their practical use in various electrochemical energy devices. This research was published in the esteemed international academic journal 'Journal of Materials Chemistry A' with an Impact Factor of 11.9 in October 2023. - Development of a long-term photosynthetic hydrogen production system using green algae (2023.10.25)
- Development of a long-term photosynthetic hydrogen production system using green algae The research team of Professor Wonhyeong Ryu of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the research team of Professor Hyunseo Ahn of the Department of Chemistry developed a photosynthetic hydrogen production system that produces hydrogen for a long period of time with high photon-hydrogen quantum efficiency. In this paper, the electron transfer and efficiency problems for hydrogen production using existing green algae were significantly improved through CNT mechanical insertion and Pt NP synthesis. In addition, the possibility of commercialization was demonstrated by driving an RC mobility device with an improved hydrogen production system. The study was published in the international academic journal 'Nature Communications' (Impact Factor: 16.6, top 7.5%) in October 2023. The link: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-023-42529-3
